Back2Basics – Water

WATER is deemed the most essential ‘nutrient’ to humans even though it provides zero substance. We all know the body is 80% water.

What you don’t know is that water assists in:

  • controlling body temperature
  • aiding in digestion, allowing the body to absorb nutrients
  • helping to eliminate waste
  • maintaining bowel regularity
  • providing a buffer between cells, muscles and joints

The body can become dehydrated if water is not replenished from the loss due to sweating, breathing and voiding. Basically, if more water is lost than that taken in, dehydration occurs. A 2-3% weight loss in fluid will impair performance. Therefore, water is the healthiest way to quench thirst and keep the body hydrated. Amounts required vary among individuals and factors such as weather and activity levels influence requirements as well. Choose water as your choice of beverage and drink it regularly.

Knowing the importance of water is one thing and taking it upon ourselves to hydrate and provide the body for its vitality is another, but let’s take it a step further, noting its scarcity, fragility and global requirement.  Being responsible to conserve whenever possible goes a long way, literally. Having access to safe drinking water is fortunate and by conserving whenever possible, it can help improve the quality of life for others.  Water is best used when consumed not wasted.
